Jay Shah Begins Tenure as ICC Chairman from Today After Successful BCCI Stint

Jay Shah as New ICC Chair: Jay Shah has resigned from his post as Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and has started his term as President of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the President of the ICC in August this year. He is the youngest president to hold this post.

Jay Shah is currently only 35 years old. With this, he has become the 5th Indian to rule the ICC. Jay Shah has taken over the ICC chair amid the ongoing controversy over the Champions Trophy, so now Jay Shah is going to play an important role in the decision to be taken on this tournament.

Jai Shah was given the responsibility of BCCI Secretary in 2019. Jai Shah has served in BCCI for almost 6 years. Along with this, he has also been the President of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021. Now Jai Shah will work for the ICC. He has replaced Greg Barclay, who was the chairman of the ICC twice in a row.

The first ICC tournament during Jay Shah's tenure will be the Champions Trophy, on which a decision is yet to be taken. Actually, Pakistan is hosting the tournament, but India wants its matches on a hybrid model, about which there has been a controversy for the last several days.

In his first statement as ICC Chair, Shah outlined his priorities for his term, including leveraging the sport’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games as a pivotal opportunity as well as further accelerating the growth of the women’s game.

"I am honoured to take on the role of ICC Chair and grateful for the support and trust of the ICC Directors and Member Boards,” Shah said in a statement.

“This is an exciting time for the sport as we prepare for the LA28 Olympic Games and work to make cricket more inclusive and engaging for fans worldwide.

“We are at a critical juncture with the coexistence of multiple formats and the need to accelerate the growth of the women’s game.

“Cricket holds immense potential globally, and I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and Member countries to seize these opportunities and take the sport to new heights.”- Jay Shah said.

Shah expressed gratitude to outgoing ICC Chair Greg Barclay, recognizing his contributions over the past four years. "I would like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership in the role for the past four years and the milestones achieved during that period," Shah said.

Jay Shah has been associated with the world of cricket since 2009. In 2009, he started his journey with the Gujarat Cricket Association. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of the world's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. After this, he entered the BCCI in 2019. Before Jay Shah, only 4 Indians had held the post of ICC President. Before him, Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar have held this responsibility.
