Gautam Gambhir Could be Sacked as Test Coach, Depends On Upcoming BGT Trophy's Results
A 3-0 loss against New Zealand raised big questions about India's performance in the World Test Championship final. Questions are also raised about Gautam Gambhir's coaching.
Right after became T20 World Cup Champion team India appointed Gambhir as new head coach. But since then shame has been Gautam Gambhir's companion. The Indian team has set several embarrassing precedents since last July. The most recent example of which is the whitewash against New Zealand at home. The last time an Indian team was in such a predicament was 24 years ago.
It is heard that the BCCI is fed up with the back-to-back disappointing results. According to an all-India media report, the board officials are so disappointed with Gambhir's performance that they are even considering releasing him from red-ball cricket.
The New Zealand series loss at home has called into question Gambhir's competence as a coach in red ball cricket. Coach Gambhir had to face tough questions from the board officials in the autopsy of this loss on Friday. The board feels that coach Gambhir's 'single-mindedness' is largely responsible for the disappointing result against New Zealand.
According to sources, the board leaders raised questions about several decisions taken by Gambhir in that meeting. Board officials question, Why was Jasprit Bumrah rested in the Mumbai Test after going down 2-0 in the series? Why was a spin assisted pitch made in Mumbai despite being caught in front of spin in Pune? Sources claim that the board officials have also raised questions about Gambhir's tendency to 'form' on the pitch.
All-India media daily 'Dainik Jagran' claims that the board bosses have decided that the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy is Gambhir's real 'test'. Failure to pass that test can result in removal from the post of red ball cricket coach. Gambhir's role in Tests has already been questioned. 'Dainik Jagran' claims that VVS Laxman may be replaced by Gambhir if he does not perform well in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
And Gambhir may be asked to coach only in limited overs cricket. Another question arises there. If removed from red-ball cricket, will Gambhir himself want to stay with the white ball? In that case, Dravid's successor can completely remove himself from the position of coach of the Indian team.
A 3-0 loss against New Zealand raised big questions about India's chances to play in the World Test Championship final. To play the WTC Final for team Rohit have to win three or four matches in Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. That is the condition to save Gambhir's job in Tests.
