Babar Azam was Unhappy with Coach Gary Kirsten, Reason behind he Step Down from Captaincy
Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy after he faced criticism in the report from coach Gary Kirsten, which was submitted after the T20 World Cup 2024 debacle.
Babar Azam and Pakistan Cricket Board: Pakistan's star batsman Babar Azam had decided to leave the limited overs captaincy. Babar suddenly announced this on Wednesday through social media, which surprised everyone. However, close sources say that the reason for Babar's decision is also largely due to the report of head coach Gary Kirsten.
Gary Kirsten in his report submitted to the board, discussed the dressing room environment and also the behaviour and non-cooperation of some players in England and the T20 Cup World Cup.
This year, under the leadership of Babar, Pakistan had a bad result in the T20 World Cup. They could not go to knock out. Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi asked the coaches to report why the team played poorly. After this report Babar reportedly felt that he was being solely blamed for the T20 World Cup debacle. And that's why he left the captaincy again.
"Babar was not happy with the observations and recommendations of Kirsten and even assistant coach, Azhar Mahmood and felt he was solely being blamed for the disappointing performances," one insider was quoted as saying by PTI.
According to another source, Babar is also not happy on the PCB. When he was made captain for the second time, he was said to lead the T20 side. The leadership of the one-day team was not announced. Pakistan has not played one-day cricket for a long time. In this situation, Babar was in doubt whether he would be the captain in the Champions Trophy or not. That is why he left the T20 leadership.
Babar had complained to some board officials, who had worked a lot with him, that it was unfortunate the PCB didn't take his past performances and results into their consideration nor showed the required confidence and trust in him.
Next Pakistan Captain for White-Ball Cricket?
The PCB is in no hurry to announce the name of the captain in the white ball format. It has asked selector Asad Shafiq and some members of the selection committee to recommend a name after thorough discussions. The source said, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that he wants to know all the official discussions by the selection committee. This will also include the opinion of both the foreign head coaches of the team. This will maintain transparency and a clear reason will be known for appointing the captain.
