IND vs WI: Ravindra Jadeja reflects on new role as vice-captain

India entered the West Indies series with confidence. One of the main talking points was Ravindra Jadeja becoming vice-captain. In a video shared by ICC, the all-rounder said he was surprised and first saw the ‘VC’ tag beside his name when the squad was announced. Jadeja stressed that the honour comes with responsibility and said he values the trust shown by the captain, coach, and management. He explained that he always wants to share his experience for the benefit of the team and is ready to help with planning whenever needed.

At the same time, Jadeja linked his confidence to recent performances in England, stating that doing well abroad boosts belief. The spin bowling all-rounder said such experiences give him confidence to contribute with both bat and ball. Jadeja added that his personal goals remain simple: score runs when the opportunity comes and pick up wickets when required. For him, the new role is not about status but about maintaining consistency and supporting the team’s broader ambitions.

“They didn’t say anything to me. I just saw 'VC' written next to my name when the team was announced. At the end of the day, whatever experience you have to share, you do it for the team. They gave me the respect. The captain, the coach and the management have decided to give me the responsibility. Whenever the team needs anything regarding team planning or whatever, I am always happy to contribute," stated Jadeja in a video released by ICC.

“As a player, I gain my confidence. Whenever you perform in England, you get the confidence. Hopefully, I can continue and take forward that confidence into this series, score some runs and take some wickets,” he added.

India dominates the opening day against the West Indies

While Jadeja adjusted to his new role, India’s performance on the field stood out. West Indies won the toss and batted first, but their innings ended at 162 in 44.1 overs. Mohammed Siraj spearheaded the attack with 4 for 40, striking at crucial intervals to remove the top and middle order. Jasprit Bumrah took 3 for 42, including two pinpoint yorkers that rattled the stumps. Kuldeep Yadav, back in Test cricket after more than a year, impressed with 2 for 25, while Washington Sundar took one wicket late on.

The West Indies batting card offered little resistance apart from Justin Greaves with 32, Roston Chase with 24, and Shai Hope with 26. India reached 121 for 2 at stumps in reply, trailing by just 41 runs. KL Rahul anchored the innings with an unbeaten 53, while Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 36 before getting out. With the bowlers performing well and the batsmen giving a solid start, India closed the first day in a dominant position. Going into the second day, the hosts look well placed to tighten their grip on the Test.
