Pretoria Capitals have taken a big decision ahead of the SA20 2025 season. The team have announced former Indian captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly as the head coach. This will be his first time when he will play the role of head coach with a professional franchise. The team based in Centurion welcomed Ganguly by putting an official post on social media and made it clear that this season they are going to come up with a new thinking.
The journey of the team has been full of ups and downs so far. In 2023, Pretoria Capitals finished first in the league stage and reached the final, but missed the title. After this, the next two seasons proved to be disappointing. In both 2024 and 2025, the Capitals finished fifth and were out of the playoffs.
Especially in the last season, under the coach of Jonathan Trott, the team won only two matches out of 10, after which the change was considered certain. Now the team management is confident that Ganguly's experience and understanding of cricket will give a new direction to the players.
Shaun Pollock becomes an assistant coach
Along with Ganguly, the team has appointed former veteran bowler Shaun Pollock as assistant coach. This combination can prove to be special for the Capitals. Ganguly has already been associated with JSW Sports and has also contributed to IPL and WPL with the Delhi Capitals. His long experience from cricket administration to strategy making will now come in handy for Pretoria Capitals in SA20. Under his leadership, the team's hopes will once again be towards the title.
Opinion:
This move of Pretoria Capitals seems to be a decision taken at the right time. The pair of Sourav Ganguly and Shaun Pollock can give balance and direction to the team. If the players are able to establish the right coordination, then the Capitals can become a strong contender in SA20 this time.
