Sanju Samson Confesses the One Fear That Kept Haunting Him Before His Match-Winning 97 Against West Indies

Sanju Samson produced one of Indian cricket's finest pressure innings. He stroked an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls to steer India past the West Indies and into the T20 World Cup semifinals. Twelve fours and four sixes flew off his bat during the knock. This proved to be the decisive factor in India's five-wicket victory. India overhauled a testing 196-run target with four balls remaining.

Yet behind that composed exterior, Samson fought a fierce internal battle. He admitted after the match that the thought of "what if not" kept creeping into his mind during the high-stakes chase. Rather than suppressing that anxiety, he repeatedly pulled his attention back to the present.

He trusted himself to react to each delivery on its merit. Samson's ability to anchor the innings while keeping the required rate in check ultimately proved the difference between a famous victory and a crushing exit.

Beyond the tactical brilliance, Samson etched his name into the record books. He surpassed Virat Kohli's mark for the highest individual score by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup run chase. Kohli hit that iconic unbeaten 82 against Australia in 2016 and did it again against Pakistan in 2022. That mark had stood as a benchmark of pressure batting for a long time. Samson's 97 cleared that mark convincingly. This added fresh historical weight to an already remarkable innings.

The emotional significance clearly ran deep for the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter. Samson spoke openly about years of self-doubt. He described a career where both opportunity and heartbreak showed up in equal measure before this breakthrough moment arrived.

Here is what Sanju Samson said:

"There is always a question: what if not? So definitely that keeps on playing in your mind. But when that thought kept on coming, I just brought myself into the present moment and just looked at the ball and trusted myself to react according to the ball in merit, so I think that worked out pretty well today."

"It means the whole world, actually, to me. Right from the day I started playing, I started dreaming of playing for the country. I think this is the day I was waiting for. I'm very grateful, very thankful. I've always had a very special journey with lots of ups and downs, but I've kept on doubting myself, kept on thinking, what if, what if, can I make it, can I make it? But I kept on believing, and thanks to the Lord Almighty for actually blessing me today. I think this is one of the greatest days of my life."

India now advances to face England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 5th March. Meanwhile, South Africa meets New Zealand in Kolkata on 4th March. Samson's innings, which he built through discipline and raw technical skill, gave India every reason for genuine confidence heading into the final four.
