The England and Wales Cricket Board sacked Brendon McCullum on Sunday after a chaotic home series defeat against New Zealand. This heavy loss forced captain Ben Stokes into immediate international retirement. For four years, England played a wild, ultra-attacking brand of cricket, winning 27 matches but losing 20 games alongside two draws out of 49 total fixtures. A recent dreadful run completely ruined their momentum, leaving the side with seven defeats from their last ten outings.
The winter Ashes tour of Australia caused immense damage, ending in a 4-1 thrashing that exposed massive technical flaws and triggered intense media scrutiny over off-field drinking incidents. That final 1-2 home series loss against the Kiwis finished the regime. Whilst the board kept McCullum to lead the white-ball squads, selectors instantly started looking for a fresh face to rebuild the Test line-up before the Pakistan series. Speculation grew fast as several big names joined the official shortlist.
Rahul Dravid tops the shortlist
A surprise report from the Daily Telegraph linked Indian batting great Rahul Dravid to the vacant position. He previously led India through an incredibly successful period, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and reaching the finals of both the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023. English cricket officials like his calm, organised style, viewing it as the perfect fix for the chaotic approach that wrecked the previous setup. Though rumours indicate Rahul Dravid hates the idea of constant international travel, this specific red-ball vacancy offers a lighter schedule.
Test cricket requires less time on the road compared to all-format roles, giving him long breaks at home while letting him support the traditional format he loves most.
Former England boss Andy Flower remains another strong option because he previously took the team to the number one ranking during his highly successful first stint. His stock rose further after winning consecutive Indian Premier League titles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025 and 2026.
The board will let the new coach keep an IPL job, which might persuade Flower to sign a contract. Glamorgan coach Richard Dawson, Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, and England Lions boss Andrew Flintoff are also under consideration. Pakistan coach Mike Hesson and Lucknow Super Giants leader Justin Langer complete the list, giving the board plenty of different tactical options.
