Varun Chakaravarthy added to Team India's ODI Squad against England: Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who was in great form in the T20 series against England, has been given a place in the ODI team. He was not given a chance in this format earlier but Varun, who won the Player of the Series title in the T20 series, was seen as no match for the English batsmen, impressed by which the selectors decided to give him a chance in the ODI format as well. If he gets a chance in the playing XI, it will be his debut.
The team management wants the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowler to 'maintain his rhythm'. There is every possibility that Chakravarthy could replace one of the four specialist spinners in the Champions Trophy squad. He could be included in place of either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar. Either of these two could be dropped from the squad to include Chakravarthy before the final squad is announced. A lot will depend on how Chakravarthy performs in the ODIs.
Chakravarthy, who was named the Player of the Series for taking 14 wickets at an impressive average of 9.85 on batting-friendly pitches in the five-match T20 series against England, was selected in the squad ahead of the start of the ODI series. He was seen training and bowling during the Indian team's net session on Tuesday.
The deadline for team changes for the Champions Trophy is February 12 and in such a situation he remains a strong contender for selection. The Indian team has three finger spinners, out of which two are left-arm bowlers (Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel) and one is right-arm off-spinner Washington Sundar. Kuldeep Yadav, who returned after a sports hernia operation in October 2024, is the only wrist spinner in the team.
India’s updated squad for ODI series against England: Rohit Sharma (C), Ꮪhubman Gill (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohd. Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy.
