After loosing toss in 20 matches row India finally won toss in this match and opted to bowl first. After losing the toss and being put in to bat, South Africa got off to a poor start, losing Ryan Rickelton (0) in the very first over. He was caught by wicketkeeper KL Rahul off the bowling of Arshdeep Singh. Captain Temba Bavuma then came to the crease and, along with Quinton de Kock, steadied the innings and scored runs quickly. The two batsmen added 113 runs for the second wicket. Ravindra Jadeja ended this partnership in the 21st over, dismissing Bavuma. Temba Bavuma scored 48 runs off 67 balls, including five fours.
Following this, Matthew Breetzke (24) was dismissed leg before wicket by Prasidh Krishna. In the same over, Krishna also claimed the wicket of Aiden Markram (1). Meanwhile, in the 30th over, De Kock completed his century with a six off Harshit Rana's bowling. This was his seventh century against India. With this, he equaled Sanath Jayasuriya's record for the most ODI centuries against India. He also equaled AB de Villiers' record for the most centuries by a foreign batsman in India.
In the 33rd over, Prasidh Krishna bowled Quinton de Kock, giving South Africa their fifth setback. Quinton de Kock scored 106 runs off 89 balls, hitting eight fours and six sixes. Kuldeep Yadav then struck in the 39th over, first dismissing Dewald Brevis (29) and then Marco Jansen (17) on the third ball of the same over. Kuldeep also accounted for Corbin Bosch (9) and Lungi Ngidi (1). On the fifth ball of the 48th over, Prasidh Krishna bowled Ottniel Baartman (3), bringing South Africa's innings to an end at a score of 270.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav took four wickets for 41 runs. Prasidh Krishna also claimed four wickets. Arshdeep Singh and Ravindra Jadeja dismissed one batsman each.
