India claimed the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 title on 8th March, becoming the first team in history to defend the trophy, win the tournament on home soil and lift it three times, all simultaneously, at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Suryakumar Yadav's side tore through New Zealand in the final, posting 255 for five before Jasprit Bumrah's four wickets and Axar Patel's three reduced the Kiwis to 159, winning the match by 96 runs. Sanju Samson, left out of the squad early in the tournament, returned as opener and struck 97 not out, 89 and 89 on his way to the Player of the Tournament award. Abhishek Sharma contributed a half-century in the final itself, with the coaching staff quick to single him out for recognition afterwards.

The title run was not entirely smooth, as India suffered a 76-run defeat to South Africa in the Super Eights that instantly turned every subsequent fixture into a must-win. Yet Gambhir held his nerve throughout; he had pushed aggressive cricket from day one, willing to take the odd heavy loss to generate totals around 250, and India did exactly that in the matches that mattered most.

After the final, speaking on Star Sports, Gambhir made clear his ambitions go well past what was achieved on Sunday night. "This is just the beginning, not the end. There's still plenty to accomplish. We haven't crossed 300 yet, but we aim to, and our goal is to become even more ruthless," he said. He dedicated the trophy to Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and former BCCI secretary Jay Shah, crediting each for laying the infrastructure that made this team possible.

The 300 target pre-dated the tournament by months. Gambhir had openly discussed his preference for totals in the 250-260 range over conservative 160-170 scores, stating he would rather see his side bowled out for 100 than settle for something that takes them nowhere. Television pundits debated whether 300 was even reachable in T20 cricket, but India's 255 in the final brought that figure closer to reality, and with Gambhir's stated ambitions unchanged, that target is not going away any time soon.
