Captain Bavuma Back as Proteas Announced Test Squad for India Series

South Africa Squads Test Series against India: The South African cricket team is going to come to India next month to play a series of two Test matches, three ODIs and five T20 matches. The world champion South African team has been announced for the Test series starting from November 14. Temba Bavuma, who defeated Australia in the last WTC cycle to make the team champion, has returned as captain.

Test captain Temba Bavuma is returning to the team after being ruled out of the recent Test series against Pakistan as he has fully recovered from a left calf injury.

The first Test match will start on November 14 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, after which the team will leave for Guwahati, where the second Test match will be held from November 22 at the ACA Stadium.

In the 15-member squad selected for the two Test matches in India, Cricket South Africa has given three specialist spinners Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer and Senuran Muthuswamy a place in their team while three fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch have also been made part of the squad.

Speaking about the squad selection, South Africa Head Coach Shukri Conrad said, “We’ve kept the bulk of the squad that competed in the two-match series against Pakistan. Those players showed real character and fought hard to come from behind and draw that series.

“We are anticipating a similar challenge in India, and many of the players who stood up in those conditions will once again be key for us.

“Pakistan was a squad effort and India will demand the same. Every player has a role to play in ensuring we remain competitive in what is always a tough place to tour.”

Under Bavuma, South Africa have won nine out of 10 matches played so far in the World Test Championship (WTC). South Africa won a Test series in India for the last time in 2000. The team under the leadership of Hansie Cronje defeated the Sachin Tendulkar-led team India by 4 wickets in the first Test played at the Wankhede Stadium from 24 to 26 February and won by an innings and 71 runs in the first Test played in Bengaluru from 2 to 6 March.

South Africa have won only two matches in India in the last 25 years, and in their last Test tour of India in 2019, they suffered humiliating defeats in all three matches.

South Africa Squad for India Tour: Temba Bavuma (C), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne.
