The Indian team took a 30-run lead in the first innings, but South Africa bounced back with the help of their bowlers and defeated India to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. South Africa was all out for 153 in the second innings and, taking a lead of 123 runs, set India a target of 124 runs. India's batting was very poor in the second innings and the team was all out for 93 runs in the second session itself.

Playing XI

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

South Africa: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma(c), Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne(w), Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj.

Washington Sundar top-scored for India, scoring 31 runs. Axar Patel was batting well and tried to lead India to victory by hitting consecutive fours and sixes off Keshav Maharaj, but he was dismissed for a poor shot, and then Keshav dismissed Mohammed Siraj, ending India's innings. India captain Shubman Gill did not bat in the second innings either.

For India, apart from Washington and Akshar, Ravindra Jadeja scored 18, Dhruv Jurel 13, Rishabh Pant 2, KL Rahul 1 and Kuldeep Yadav 1. Jasprit Bumrah remained unbeaten without opening his account. For South Africa, Simon Harmer took four wickets, while Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj took two wickets each. Aiden Markram got one wicket.

“A little bit of nerves (after being hit for two sixes and a four). I just wanted to be clear with my plans. Luckily I got the rewards; was a brilliant catch by Temba and we got back. (On Harmer) He was phenomenal, he showed his class, he showed why he has 1000 FC wickets. It’s a privilege to bowl alongside him. Take nothing away from Marco Jansen as well. What a team effort, there has been exceptional team effort as well. Really great desire to get of the line, and we did it,” Maharaj said after dismissing Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj in consecutive deliveries to seal South Africa’s first Test win in India in 15 years.

South Africa not only won the match but also took a crucial 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. Now, it's a do-or-die situation for the Indian team, as the second and decisive Test of the series begins in Guwahati on November 22nd.
