Sanju Samson needs to consistently start winning games for India: Gautam Gambhir
The former India opener has opined that the wicket-keeper batter needs to pull up his socks when it comes to winning games consistently for Team India.
Sanju Samson has looked in fine form with the bat during the 2024 IPL season for Rajasthan Royals. The right-hander has been in prime form for the last few months as the wicket keeper batter scored his first T20I century against South Africa in December 2023. The 29-year-old has showcased consistency in the ongoing IPL season. Gautam Gambhir feels that now with the right-hander being selected for the T20 World Cup to be held in USA & West Indies in June, Sanju Samson needs to win matches more consistently for Team India.
The right-hander will represent Team India in an ICC event for the first time. Samson has been included in the squad as a backup wicketkeeper. Gambhir urged Samson should try to win games regularly for Team India.
He stated, " Now that you have got the opportunity you need to win games regularly for India as you have got the required experience of playing at the top level,".
Gambhir further added, " You have played International cricket and you have been impressive in the IPL, and now you have the opportunity to represent the national side in the T20 World Cup." Gambhir said, " I hope Sanju showcases his talent in the World Cup because when you play well you are at the centre stage."
When Gambhir won his first IPL title as skipper in 2012, Sanju was in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad but he couldn't play a single game. Gambhir pointed out, "Sanju Samson has loads of talent and you just need five minutes to judge his talent. In any field, skills as well as mental aspects are important for growth.
Gambhir said, " Sanju has been spot on when it comes to his captaincy, wicket keeping, power hitting or his fitness. Captaincy helps you to judge situations in a better way and helps you to assess the game. If you are spot on in these two aspects then it helps you grow as a batter. Hopefully, Gambhir's captaincy in the IPL helps him to perform well as a batter in the T20 World Cup."
