Riot Situation in England, Sri Lankan Players Doubtful about Security in the Upcoming Test Series
The Sri Lankan cricket team has expressed concerns regarding player safety ahead of their upcoming test series against England, scheduled to begin on August 21st at Old Trafford.
Sri Lanka Raise Security Concerns Over England Test Series: The social situation in England is pretty bad at the moment. Riot situation has arisen in several parts of the country. Tensions have built up between the two communities. In such a situation, Sri Lanka is supposed to visit England. They are scheduled to play a Test series there. The Sri Lankan cricket team has expressed doubts about visiting England under such circumstances.
Fears have been expressed that their security may be disturbed there. Because anti-immigrant disputes are going on in different cities of England. In such a situation, however, the England and Wales Cricket Board has assured the Sri Lanka board and the cricketers about the security.
The Sri Lankan cricketers have already started the practice that is supposed to take place before the start of this series. And in such a situation they have brought forward the issue of security. Because it is not at all clear to them what the ECB has planned for their security in this trip.
Seven cricketers and two support staff have already appealed to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board to ensure security and provide better security. Because in London from where they will travel between the field and the hotel, an application has been made to ensure the safety of the road.
"Most of the issues seem not to be close to where we are but everyone is still a little concerned. We can't go out to dinner or do anything like that. Mostly we stay in the hotel. No one wants to run into trouble and get beaten up. We've asked the board to try and ask for some security for us until the main team arrives, but we haven't heard anything back yet," a Sri Lankan player in England told ESPNcricinfo.
Sri Lanka's team manager Mahinda Halangoda however said that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reassured Colombo that adequate security arrangements are in place.
"I raised the issue with them, but the ECB responded very quickly and sent us their comprehensive security arrangements," Halangoda said. "We'll be having a security liaison on the tour from them as well."
Sri Lanka will play three Test matches on England tour. The first test match will be played in Manchester on 21 August. The second Test match will be played at Lord's on August 29. The third Test match will be held at the Oval on September 6.
