IPL 2026: Former England batter Kevin Pietersen predicts Top 4 teams who could make it to the playoffs

Kevin Pietersen has his take on the four teams that might make it to the playoffs of the Indian Premier League 2026. The first round of games has concluded, after which the former England batter has shared his views on the four teams who are favourites to make it to the playoffs.

Pietersen posted on his X account that after reviewing the first round of games in the ongoing season, the top four teams could be Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. He further wrote that the situation might change if some players suffer injuries, but, as of now, based on his observations, these four teams could make it to the top 4.

The tournament got off to an exciting start with some teams already making an impression with some enigmatic performances. Pietersen came up with this prediction: Mumbai Indians registered a brilliant chase against KKR at the Wankhede Stadium on the 29th of March, while Delhi Capitals are at the top with 4 points after registering 2 wins in 2 games.

Punjab Kings have also registered 2 wins in 2 games, showcasing an attacking style of play and are second in the points table.  Rajasthan Royals are combining well in all departments and are third in the points table.

Pietersen’s opinions highlight how outcomes could change in a tournament of such competitive nature. Performances in the initial rounds are bound to attract predictions, though the tournament can throw up surprising results in the final round.

There have been situations in previous editions when teams that start impressively dominate the tournament, but performing consistently is tough, and that’s where a team's temperament comes into play.

Pietersen further added that the tournament is unpredictable and his views are based on the results the first round of games has produced. He also stated that injuries or other elements could change situations quickly. A team needs to have enough options if there are injuries, and a player’s fitness also plays a big role as the tournament moves ahead.

It will all depend on the consistency of a team, the combination and how a particular team adjusts to the conditions as the tournament progresses. It will be interesting to see whether Pietersen is spot on with his prediction or not.
