The first day's match between India and New Zealand had to be ended without a toss due to rain. On the second day, the match started 15 minutes early and India won the toss and chose to bat first. This decision of Indian captain Rohit Sharma proved wrong as the Indian batting order badly collapsed and the team's 11 players could not score even 50 runs together. After poor batting, Team India's bowling was also not good. Overall, this day was not good for India.

For New Zealand, captain Tom Latham and Devon Conway gave the team a great start and added 67 runs for the first wicket. Latham became the victim of Kuldeep Yadav after scoring 15 runs. After this, Conway along with Will Young took over the innings. Young was dismissed after scoring 33 runs on Jadeja's ball. After this, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin gave India the third success by bowling out Conway who was moving towards a century and stopped Conway from scoring a century. Conway returned to the pavilion after scoring 91 runs in 105 balls with the help of 11 fours and three sixes.

The total of 46 runs is India’s lowest innings total in Tests played on Indian soil and third lowest overall. India’s lowest total in Tests is 36, which it registered during the Day-Night Test played against Australia in Adelaide (December 2020).
