Chris Silverwood made a big decision recently as he decided to resign from the post of Sri Lanka's head coach after the team's below-par performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardena also quit as the team's consultant coach but Silverwood stated that he wanted to spend some time with his family which was the main reason behind his resignation from the post.
He stated, "As an International coach one has to stay away from the family for a long time."He further stated, "After talking to my family, I feel I need to return home and spend some time with my family." He further added," I was honored to be the head coach of Sri Lanka as I was part of some great memories''.
Silverwood thanked the Sri Lankan Cricket Board for this opportunity and said he will always relish these memorable moments during his tenure as head coach.
The Sri Lankan team couldn't make it to the Super 8 stage as it won only one match, lost two, and one match ended in no result. During his time as head coach, Sri Lanka won the 2022 Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi and reached the final of the 2023 Asia Cup. In addition to this, the team won a bilateral ODI series against Australia at home in 2022 and two test series against Bangladesh.
The Sri Lankan Cricket Board will be in search of its next head coach after Silverwood's resignation. Sri Lanka will play a bilateral ODI series against India in July at home after which the team will travel to England for the test series.
The Sri Lankan Cricket Board has begun preparations for getting its next coach on board and now the board has some time to analyze candidates and appoint a suitable candidate who can continue with the good work done by Silverwood and keeping a tab on issues where improvement is needed.
