By India Today Web Desk: Faf du Plessis has joined the Perth Scorchers for the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). The former South Africa skipper replaced England batter Laurie Evans, who was left out of the squad after he was tested positive for doping.

Du Plessis was one of the platinum players in the draft, but he failed to find a team. The veteran is set to take part in seven matches for the four-time champions before heading home for the inaugural edition of the SA20.

"I think the first thing that jumps to mind is that Perth are four-time champions, which is very impressive. Any player who plays around the world wants to win competitions, so it's a great franchise to be part of," du Plessis was quoted as saying.

"I'm also keen to come in and learn. I think it's important to learn from other people and organisations, and find out why they're successful. I'm also excited to share my experiences and the things I've learned, and hopefully that can be a great combination," he added.

Back in 2012, Du Plessis played only one match for the Melbourne Renegades and hasn't played in the tournament since then. In 311 T20 matches in his career, du Plessis has racked up 8074 runs at an average of 31.05 and a strike-rate of 130.85 with four centuries and 50 half-centuries to show for his efforts.

However, the 38-year-old from Pretoria hasn't played a match since representing the St Lucia Kings in the previous edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) back in September.

The Scorchers are set to start their campaign on Saturday, December 17 against Sydney Sixers at the Perth Stadium.
