Nominees for ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released the nomination list for the Best Test Player of the Year which includes India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and England's experienced batsman Joe Root.

Nominees for ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024

ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year Nominees: The ICC has announced the names of 4 players for the Men's Test Cricketer of the Year 2024 award. These players include India's star fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah, England's star batsmen Joe Root and Harry Brook as well as Sri Lanka's batsman Kamindu Mendis. One of these players will be selected as the best Test cricketer of the year 2024 based on the votes of cricket fans.

Jasprit Bumrah (India)

India's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker in the Test format in the year 2024 and he took 71 wickets in 13 Test matches, which included 5 five-wicket hauls and 4 four-wicket hauls. His economy rate was 2.96 while the average was 14.92. The ICC considered Bumrah's match-changing spell in Perth as one of his most memorable performances as India won by 295 runs.

The ICC said, Bumrah, who returned to Test cricket after recovering from a back injury in 2023, dominated the bowling in 2024. In 13 Test matches in this calendar year, Bumrah performed his best ever, taking 71 wickets and was the most successful bowler in this format. Whether the conditions were favorable for fast bowlers in South Africa and Australia or difficult conditions for fast bowlers at home, Bumrah performed impressively throughout the year.

Joe Root (England)

Joe Root scored 1556 runs in 17 Test matches played in the year 2024 and during this his average was 55.57 while he scored 6 centuries and 5 half-centuries this year and his best score in Tests this year was 262 runs. A milestone innings for Root came in Multan, during the first of three Tests against Pakistan. The England top-order batter amassed a career-best score of 262 - his sixth double hundred, putting him on level terms with the likes of Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar.

In addition to his batting exploits, Root also provided an extra spin option, and impressed with a four-wicket haul in the marquee series against India.

Harry Brook (England)

In third place in this list is Harry Brook of England who scored 1100 runs in 12 test matches this year with an average of 55.00 which includes 4 centuries and 3 half-centuries. Brook's best score in test this year was 317 runs. A noticeable trait in his performances was the fact that most of his runs (723) came away from home while playing the same number of games as he did in England (6).

To wrap the year on a successful note, Brook closed the tour of New Zealand as the top-scorer to round off England’s first series win in the country since 2008.

Kamindu Mendis (Sri Lanka)

Kamindu Mendis scored 1049 runs in 9 Test matches this year at an average of 74.92 which included 5 centuries and 3 half-centuries. His best inning this year was 182 not out in Test. Putting in a admirable performances both home and away, Mendis boasted incredible numbers. The most notable was him becoming the joint-third quickest to score 1000 Test runs - equalling Sir Don Bradman’s 13-innings mark to reach the milestone.

Mendis was the leading protagonist in Sri Lanka’s 2-0 series sweep against New Zealand at home, scoring twin hundreds across the two Tests.
