IPL 2025: The BCCI has not only released the retention policy for IPL 2025, but has also made important rules to curb the cunningness of foreign players participating in the auction, while it has decided to retain the controversial Impact Player rule.
IPL 2025 Rules and Regulations: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced the important rules related to the mega auction of IPL 2025 and the next season. The board announced this after the IPL Governing Council meeting on Saturday 28 September. As expected, this time the number of player retention has been increased from 4 to 6, which most of the franchises were demanding.
Also, this time the auction purse has also increased, while for the first time, match fees have also been introduced. Not only this, the board has also announced to crack down on those players who withdraw their names just before the season starts despite being sold in the auction. Such players will be banned from participating in the tournament.
8 Major Rules and Regulations for Upcoming IPL Seasons
1) The IPL franchises can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option.
2) Also, it will depend on the franchise as to how it wants to retain those 6 players. If the franchise wants, they can retain all the 6 players directly or can choose the option of ‘Right to Match’ (RTM) in the mega auction. Or you can retain some and buy the rest with right to match.
3) For the first time, match fees have been introduced, under which every player in the playing eleven (plus impact players) will get Rs 7.5 lakh for playing a match. For this, the franchise will have to keep aside Rs 12.60 crore per year, which will be separate from the auction purse.
4) The auction purse has been increased from Rs 100 crore to Rs 120 crore. The total salary cap (auction purse and incremental performance pay) has now increased from Rs 110 crore to Rs 146 crore. Out of this, Rs 120 crore will be for auction purse while Rs 12.60 crore will be for match fee and the rest will be for incremental performance pay. This salary cap will increase to Rs 151 crore in 2026 and Rs 157 crore in 2027.
5) Despite all the controversies, BCCI has decided to retain the impact player rule. Not only will it remain in place in the next season, but it will also continue till the 2027 season.
6) At the same time, foreign players who only participate in the mini auction in an attempt to earn more money are now being reined in. Under the new rules, foreign players will have to register for the mega auction as well. If they do not do so, they will not even get a place in the mini auction of the next season.
7) BCCI has also taken action on the biggest complaint of the franchise owners and that is the withdrawal of players' names before the season. BCCI has made it clear that if a player withdraws his name before the season starts after being bought in the auction, he will be banned from participating in the tournament along with the auction for the next 2 seasons.
8) On the other hand, any capped Indian player (who has played or is playing international cricket) who has not been a part of the playing eleven in any format of international cricket in the last 5 years or is not a part of BCCI's central contract, will be considered an uncapped player.
