Before India's tour of Australia, Australia's veteran wicketkeeper batsman Matthew Wade has announced his retirement. Wade will now be a part of Australia's coaching staff.
Mathew Wade Retirement: The Indian team is to tour Australia next month. The 5-match Border Gavaskar Trophy will be played between the two teams. Australia has lost the last two Border Gavaskar Trophy matches at home. In such a situation, it is eager to take revenge from India. On the other hand, the Indian team is eyeing a hat-trick of Test series wins in Australia. Meanwhile, before the tour begins, Australia's leading wicketkeeper batsman Matthew Wade has announced his retirement.
36-year-old Matthew Wade made his debut for Australia in 2011. He played his last match against India in the T20 World Cup this year. Wicketkeeper batsman Wade has not got a chance to play in ODIs and Tests since 2021. He was among the heroes of Australia's victory in the 2021 T20 World Cup. He took Australia to the final by hitting three sixes against Shaheen Afridi in the semi-final match against Pakistan.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Wade played 36 Tests for Australia, scoring 1,613 runs at an average of 29.87 with four Test centuries and five fifties, including a career-best score of 117 in the fifth Ashes Test against England at The Oval in 2019. He also played 97 ODIs, scoring 1,867 runs in 83 innings at an average of 26.29, including one century and 11 fifties. In 92 T20Is, he scored 1,202 runs at an average of 26.03 with a strike rate of 134.15. He scored three half-centuries in this format, with his best score being 80.
"I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation with George (Bailey) and Andrew (McDonald) over the past six months," Wade said.
Joins Australian Coaching Staff
While Wade will continue to play domestically in Australia and appear in franchise cricket around the world, the veteran will begin his coaching journey immediately as he has been named in the Australian coaching staff for the home T20I series against Pakistan next month. Wade is eagerly looking forward to the next chapter in his cricketing journey, revealing that shifting his focus towards coaching was always his plan.
"Coaching has been on my radar over the last few years and thankfully some great opportunities have come my way, for which I am very grateful and excited. I will continue to play BBL (Big Bash League) and the odd franchise league over the summer months but around those commitments as a player I am investing heavily in my coaching"- Wade added.
