"We wanted to fight till the end. But unfortunately, they couldn't do it. It'll be tough to just assess the last two sessions. If you look at the overall test match, we had our opportunities. We had our chances. We just didn't take them, and we let Australia come back into the game when we had them 90 for six. But again, I know things can get difficult and get tough as well, but that is what we are here for. We want to be in the tough situation. We want to play hard cricket. But, yeah, I mean, look, I don't want to look at only one incident that happened in the game. We just were not good enough," Indian Captain Rohit Sharma said after match.

After the win, Australia have moved themselves to 61.46 percentage points for winning 10 of their 16 matches in the two-year cycle. South Africa are top of the charts with 66.67 points. India, meanwhile, remain third with 52.78 points.

With this defeat, India's hopes of reaching the World Test Championship have also suffered a setback. Now it will have to depend on the results of other teams. Also, the next Test in Sydney will have to be won. A draw or defeat will put Team India out of the race.

India's quest to play the WTC Final for a third straight time suffered one jolt after another. It all began with the 3-0 series loss at home against New Zealand. In Australia, India got off to a positive start, winning the opener in Perth by a massive 295 runs.
