Sanju Samson vs Jitesh Sharma: Who will play for India in the T20 World Cup 2026?

There is a sense of silent tension in Indian cricket circles as the T20 World Cup 2026 creeps closer. The countdown feels shorter than expected because there are just 10 matches left before the selectors must settle on a final squad.

This should have been a period of clarity, but the wicket-keeping position continues to sit in uncertainty. Multiple outlets reported today about a possible trade move involving Sanju Samson, with Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings discussing a swap that would send Samson to Chennai and Ravindra Jadeja the other way. While nothing is confirmed, the rumour has gained serious attention because it hints at Samson getting a fresh environment in the IPL.

However, the larger question concerns his role in the national team. Samson made his international debut 10 years ago, but his place has never remained certain. The selectors gave four wicketkeeper-batters chances since the previous T20 World Cup: Samson, Dhruv Jurel, Jitesh Sharma and Rishabh Pant.

However, no one has secured the role. The Kerala batter appeared closest after an explosive 2024 season, but his shift down the order, driven by the insistence on Shubman Gill opening, affected his rhythm, confidence and eventually his place in the XI.

A clear decision must be taken

India cannot delay a firm call anymore. The batting order has moved around far too often, and several players have looked unsure of their specific role. For the wicketkeeper-batter slot, India need someone who has already shown scoring ability against pace in the powerplay and composure under pressure.

By those measures, Samson still stands as the strongest bet. His ceiling remains higher than the others, and his best performances have come when he is trusted in the top order. Jitesh Sharma brings finishing ability, but he has not yet displayed consistent innings-building across situations.

Rishabh Pant remains a long-term option, but he has not done much in this format. Samson simply needs stability in his batting position, clarity in responsibility and patience from the management. If India choose him, define his role and allow him to settle, they will gain a player capable of deciding matches on his own in the T20 World Cup 2026.
